CURATING AND CONNECTING

AHH has always embraced both traditional spaces for the presentation of art and unconventional methods

of exhibiting.

An early AHH curatorial project saw a disused car park due for demolition as the site of an exhibition featuring 34 artists. The car park on Sidney Street, location of the famous siege of 1911,

(attended by Winston Churchill, in which ‘Peter the Painter’ and his fellow Latvian compatriots fought an armed stand-o with police) served as a curatorial opportunity to react to the history of the locality.

Due to the pending demolition of the car park the exhibition was brought together within the space of 3 weeks and stayed open for 3 consecutive days and nights prior to the destruction of the building. Visitors were received at all hours and delighted in the freedom of engaging with the

work in such a liberated way. The show opened with a screening of original archival footage of the siege provided by The British Film Institute. Later followed a screening of ‘The Man Who Knew Too Much’ (1934) by Alfred Hitchcock, who had taken great inspiration for the making of the movie from the famous footage of the siege of Sidney Street.
